Firefighters Move To New House, EMS To Move Next

Firefighters from Engine 265/Ladder 121 have packed up all of their gear and goods at the old firehouse on Beach 57 Street and moved to a new, $9.2 million dollar facility on Beach 49 Street. The new facility, which is the first in the city built for both fire apparatus and EMS ambulances, was controversial from its inception, with many locals demonstrating their belief that the move would add to the response time of emergency vehicles responding to areas such as the new Arverne By The Sea complex. Ambulance crews will reportedly join the firefighters in their new home sometime next week. Many see this as an experiment in housing together two disparate specialties that have often been at odds. Union officials from both groups have been working with the city to forestall problems when the final move is made.
