Stating The Obvious

After agreeing to write my column again, I found myself in a strange predicament. What the hell to write about?

After my last set of columns, I was quite sure that the masses in Rockaway were as computer savvy as me!

I mean really, who didn’t already know about the hottest web browser to be found in the universe…. the Firefox browser by the Mozilla team (http:// mozilla.org)! With tabbed browsing, built in ad-blocking and spy-ware protection as well as faster load times and it will not spider into your system like that confounded Internet Explorer! But like I ‘m quite sure you already know, the coolest thing about Firefox is that you can change the appearance of the browser window themes as well as hundreds of other cool plug-ins like having multiple search engines right at your fingertips (built into the browser window) or even a bandwidth tester to test the speed of your connection! To put it simply just think internet explorer after drinking three cups of espresso! Yeah, Firefox can make surfing the internet fun again!

So after that idea for a column went out the window I thought maybe I should appeal to the download audience. You know those people that spend half of their lives searching for (legal, I hope) downloads on the Kazaa Nework… But what was I thinking!? They had to know that all the crap like spy-ware, adware and Trojan type programs that Kazaa was putting on their system, plus the constant pop-up windows made Kazaa one of the worst peer-to-peer networks around! Sure, Kazaa has more users but it also has more viruses and other malignant code running around on their network than you can shake a wireless mouse at! So, I figured most people must have already made the move to Ares (http:// aresgalaxy.org) or Shareaza (http://sha reaza.com). Both are free and most importantly will not place spy-ware or adware on your machine! And get this they can even be customized to allow you to get the maximum speed on your downloads. No more stupid user share ratings!

Nope nobody wants to read a bout that stuff!

I apologize if I am rambling on about the obvious stuff. But you have to understand, you guys are really getting on the ball with this computer stuff! All you guys need now are pocket protectors and a laser pointer to look the part.

Maybe I should talk about upgrades or simple repairs for my next few columns? Hey, I got it! Maybe, I should review hardware or maybe software?

How about those new online games that are all the rage? Or maybe even security issues or better yet why don’t we do this… you ask questions and I give answers (to computer related stuff of course)!

You know what? Why don’t you drop an e-mail to me at (wavetech@xtc-media.com) or the editor of the Wave (editor@rockawave.com) and tell us how you would like to see the column shape up. That way you get the stuff that you need and I don’t have to tell you about all of these new fangled things that you probably already know about…. sounds fair enough.

Just a side note, in case you might be wondering what tricks that I have up the XTC-Media sleeve, I have been working on a concept for the last year that I think would be great for the community in the upcoming holiday season. A kind of digital directory of all the businesses on our peninsula entitled The Source CD! I have been working out the kinks to make it a free (yes, I said free) distributed to the consumer public disc! If you think that this is a great idea for our community and would like to see it happen, then shoot me an email or stop by my site for more info (http://xtc-media.com). I think it would be a great way to boost the economy all year long and especially during the winter months.

Since this column will only be once a month, I believe it will free up a lot of time for me to create new projects for XTC-Media as well as the peninsula, and still pass on relevant tech info to the masses, so if all goes well you will definitely hear the XTC-Media name, more and more.

I figure that if I can get more of you to stop using those $1,000 dollar computers to play Tetris, solitaire, minesweeper and Pinball, maybe we can show the rest of the city that Rockaway is a tech savvy kind of town!

Hey! Now I know what I can write about! Bit Torrents and DivX technology! These two things are really changing the whole download scene… But I am running out of space here so that’s going to have to wait until next month! You know how the editor gets when you run over the word limit! LOL.

Till Next Month…Leave a lane on the information highway open for me!
