Health & Harmony
Back to school sports are very important for the stress reduction of our children. It offers them an opportunity to engage in exercise, develop team relationships and excel. at something other than academics.
Inherent in the playing of sports is the inevitable injury. The most common sports injuries usually involve the head, eye, wrist, knee and ankle. My list of favorite homeopathic remedies to carry onto the sidelines are: ARNICA. Arnica Montana is a traumatic par excellence and is indicated as a first line of defense in any traumatic injury, especially where there is bruising. One dose of Arnica 30c initially and periodically as soreness, swelling or bruising warrant.
SYMPHYTUM. Symphytum is a remedy that is especially suited to injuries to the eyeball and socket.
CALENDULA. I carry calendula in ointment form as it is the best for immediate treatment of cuts and scrapes. It has antibacterial properties and will promote granulation tissue and healing without scarring.
ACONITE. When there is fright, give Aconite. Aconite is a remedy that is given when there is shock, fright from the injury. The old saying, “He’s more scared than anything” suits this remedy well.
Head injuries should be given Arnica immediately followed by a trip to your primary care physician to determine if there is a concussion or other more serious condition. Arnica is well suited to the shock that follows head trauma and will do much to allay swelling and bruising.
Wrist injuries respond well to Ruta and Rhus Tox especially if stiffness is a key symptom.
Knee injuries with cracking of the knee often do well with Causticum or Sulfur. Inflammation of the knee (acute) responds well to Apis, Bryonia and Pulsatilla.
Ankle sprains warrant a good look at Arnica, Bryonia, Rhus Tox and Ruta. Where thre is a predisposition to weak ankles consider Natrum Carbonicum, Strontium Carbonicum and Silicea.
Homeopathic remedies are prescribed on the basis of totality of symptoms of the individual case. First aid homeopathy can be done by moms and dads who have a working knowledge of the basic principles of homeopathy and a first aid Materia Medica which is a guide to remedy selection. These can be purchased at www.homeopathic. org.
Armed with some knowledge, a homeopathy first aid kit and a brave heart, you can avoid some painful nights for you and your child. Never substitute immediate first aid intervention for proper medical care. All injuries should be reported to your family doctor for further evaluation.
