  • A Far Rockaway woman died at Jamaica Hospital last Wednesday morning – hours after a van backed over her on Gateway Boulevard, police said.
  • Desta Teshome, 35, was walking northbound on the south side of Gateway Boulevard at about 9 a.m., not far from her apartment at 1012 Nameoke Street, when she was struck by a van driven by Shane Reynolds, 25, of Bay Parkway, Brooklyn, according to police.

Teshome was transported by ambulance to the trauma center at Jamaica Hospital in critical condition.

About two hours later, hospital staff told police they were hopeful the woman would survive that horrible accident, but Teshome died later that day.

A preliminary investigation found that Teshome was crossing between or had just crossed between parked cars, but it was unclear if that contributed to the driver’s apparent failure to see her. Reyonlds told police he stopped reversing after his van felt like it had gone over a speed bump.

Teshome’s husband Getachew, who was not with his wife at the time of the accident, told The Wave this week that he was still piecing together the facts surrounding her death.
