Broad Channel Hosts Historical Day 10/17
As part of New York State Archives Week, the Historical Society of the Broad Channel Civic Association will sponsor its 10th Annual Historical Day on Sunday, October17, at the VFW Hall on Shad Creek Road in Broad Channel from Noon until 5 p.m.
The public is invited to view the impressive collection amassed, thanks to the generosity of past and present residents of Broad Channel.
The town’s history is told in pictures, newspaper articles, documents, letters, written reminiscences and video interviews with long time residents. Much new material has been gathered in the last year, according to a spokesperson for the event. Residents are encouraged to bring new material for the collection. Original pictures and documents will be copied and returned to donors. Residents will also be able to record their memories of Broad Channel.
Local artists will exhibit works depicting Broad Channel. Paintings and photographs will be available for sale.
The Broad Channel Historical Collection, housed in the town library, has also been microfilmed by the Queensborough Public Library and is available at the main branch in Jamaica.
The work of the Historical Committee was started by resident Dan Mundy and aided by grants from State Senator Ada Smith and State Assemblywoman Audrey Pheffer.
