Oliver Completes USCG Basic
Frankie Rivera, son of Manny and Leeann Rivera, will celebrate his first birthday on October 26, 2004. Frankie’s grandparents are Geraldine and Charles Vanetten & Francisco and Aura Rivera. Frankie’s siblings are Manny Jr., Jennifer, Matthew, Peter, Julie, Selena, Mindy and Franny.
Coast Guard Reserve Seaman Apprentice Hakeem D. Oliver, son of Laquetta L. Little of Far Rockaway,recently graduated from the U.S. Coast Guard Recruit Training Center in Cape May, N. J.
During the eight-week training program, Oliver completed a vigorous
training curriculum consisting of academics and practical instruction on water safety and survival, military customs and courtesies, seamanship skills, first aid, fire fighting and marksmanship. A major emphasis is also placed on physical fitness, health and wellness.
Kayla McHenry, daughter of Mary Jane and Jack McHenry of Broad Channel, was the second place winner in the Kids Snapper Derby at the North Channel Yacht Club contest in early September.
Oliver and other recruits also received instruction on the Coast Guard’s core values — honor, respect and devotion to duty — and how to apply them in their military performance and personal conduct. Oliver will join 36,000 other men and women who comprise Coast Guard’s force.Men and women train together from the first day in the Coast Guard just as they do aboard ships and shore units throughout the world. To reinforce the team concept, Oliver, and other recruits were trained in preventing sexual harassment, drug and alcohol awareness, civil rights training, and the basics of the work-life balance, as well as total quality management.
Brian Brennan was born on July 27, 2004 weighing 8 lbs. 15 oz. to parents Lisa and Frank Brennan. Among Brian’s family members are his sister Sarah, cousin Amanda and grandmother Joyce.
Oliver is a 1998 graduate of George Westinghouse High School.
SPC Lakia Echols, 24, of Far Rockaway and stationed at Fort Totten, will leave for Operation Iraqi Freedom on October 9. Echols is the daughter or Arlene Thomas and Joseph Echols and will be leaving behind her son Ira Fason. Echols can be reached by email at DoeGirl07@aol.com.
