Senate Candidate To Address Rockaway Republicans
Republican Senatorial candidate, Howard Mills, who is running to unseat Democratic incumbent Charles Schumer, will visit the Rockaways on Tuesday, October 5th to speak at the Belle Harbor Yacht Club. The meeting, scheduled to start at 8:00 p.m., will be hosted by the newly formed Rockaway Republicans Club, which invited Mills. Rockaway Republicans’ president and spokesperson Thomas Lynch noted that Rockaway is the “backyard of the incumbent Senator’s former district, when Schumer served in the U.S. House of Representatives, so it’s the perfect place for Howard to come and make his case now.”
Mills, a state Assemblyman from Orange County, won the GOP endorsement late last spring at its state convention in Syracuse and has been engaged, since then, in spreading the word of his candidacy. Although a believer in smaller government, Mills has also acknowledged the serious threat to this country posed by the terror attacks of 9/11 and strongly defends the need for a proactive U.S. stance internationally. He is also an advocate of using technology to tighten up our borders and ports. But he isn’t a lock-step Republican. He doesn’t favor outlawing abortion, though he believes some degree of regulation is called for in order to prevent abuse. He also opposes a Constitutional ban on gay marriage. He is on record as supporting the Second Amendment’s right to bear arms.
Mills is expected to address a number of issues, including local concerns, when he visits the Rockaway peninsula on October 5th. The Belle Harbor Yacht Club is located on Beach Channel Drive between Beach 126 Street and Beach 127 Street.
