Celebrating National Estuaries Day

A group of 125 people from Rockaway and elsewhere enjoyed a 3 hour tour of Jamaica Bay aboard the “Dorothy B” last Sunday. Aboard were Mickey Cohen, Dan Mundy and Don Riepe to talk about the bay’s history and ecology as well as point out the local herons, ibis and egrets seen. It was a beautiful late afternoon and glorious sunset. The free cruise was sponsored by the American Littoral Society with a grant from the NY/NJ Harbor Estuary Program. Pictured, Menhaden fish (peanut bunker) were jumping in great numbers and birds such as cormorants, laughing gulls and common terns were there to enjoy the bounty.
