A ‘Doggone’ Good Time at RTC-NSAL Benefit
Proceeds from the performance were donated to the NSAL. Susan Jasper, the show’s director summed it up this way: As an animal lover, this charity is especially near and dear to my heart. The North Shore Animal League is situated in Port Washington on Long Island. It is the largest no-kill animal shelter in the northeast. NSAL has its own veterinary facility and provides lifetime medical care to animals with special needs. They rescue puppies and kittens from disaster areas like Florida, after the recent hurricanes. All these animals are saved from certain death. They are given needed medical care, spayed, neutered and vaccinated. A good clean environment is provided for them until they are placed in loving homes. My sister has been a volunteer at North Shore for a long time and I have heard countless heartbreaking and heartwarming stories, over the years, about the excellent work this wonderful organization is doing everyday. My own two beagles came to me from the North Shore Animal League, so I am thrilled to have found a way to give something back”
And something really big was definitely given back. Rockaway animal/ music lovers responded in huge numbers, filling the Post Theatre. Adding to the crowd were 6 precious puppies, specially pre-approved for adoption by the North Shore Animal League so they could go home with some lucky adopters after the show. And what more appropriate tune could be selected for a special show saluting Motown Music, than the Marvin Gaye classic, “Doggone”? The pups took to the stage in the arms of dancers Emily Arikian, Laura Cryan, Hannah McHale, Faye Peithman, Jessica Taylor and Elizabeth Vivino as RTC vocalist Matthew Gilleece serenaded the adorable puppies who responded by licking Matt all over the face. Hannah was so smitten with her little puppy that she took him home with her.
A great time was had by all. Almost all the puppies were adopted. When presented with a sizeable check from the Rockaway Theatre Company, Jill Wendrow, Senior Staff representative from North Shore Animal League gushed, “I can’t believe what a coup this has been. Puppies were placed in wonderful homes making room for more rescued animals. North Shore has received a very generous contribution, and I have discovered a theater providing fabulous entertainment right here in Queens. I wish I had known about the RTC sooner. I enjoyed the show so much, I am sorry to hear that this is the last production of the season. I’m bringing my parents back to see Rockaway Café ’04 again on October 1, during the final weekend.” On behalf of North Shore Animal League America, Jill invites anyone looking for a loving pet to come down to Port Washington. She also invites anyone who hasn’t seen the Rockaway Theatre Company’s terrific “Salute to Motown” to come up to Fort Tilden. If you don’t get to the Post Theatre this weekend you’ll miss it and that would be a “Doggone” shame!
