Pulled From Sinking Auto After Suicide Attempt

Brooklyn resident Jehuda Sulaman sits in an Emergency Medical Service ambulance after being pulled from his car, which was sinking in Jamaica Bay early Thursday morning. Police say that Sulaman was despondent over an impending divorce and drove down the boat launch ramp at the west end of Beach Channel High School at about 9:02 a.m. on Thursday, in an apparent attempt to commit suicide. Police responding to a cell phone call that there was an occupied vehicle in the bay; found the recent model car rapidly sinking. The responding patrol car called the NYPD Aviation Unit, which is housed across the bay at Floyd Bennett Field. Two SCUBA divers, PO Michael Regan and PO Frances Vitale, jumped from the helicopter into the water and pulled Sulaman from the car. One witness told a Wave reporter at the scene, “He just turned into the parking lot and rolled straight down the ramp into the water.” Sulaman, who was described by law enforcement sources as “depressed” and who cannot swim, was taken to St. John’s Episcopal Hospital in Far Rockaway in “good condition.” At press time, Sulaman was being held for observation.
