On The Beach
As we say goodbye to yet another summer season in our wonderful little seaside town, there is much to look foward to in the coming months ahead. The DFDs are gone, leaving the locals to share in their special secret that Rockaway isn’t just a beach, it’s a way of life!
The season will begin with a littany of events of political, civic, and social interest. As we’re all aware, the political climate has been heating up with the much contested Presidential race. Locally, there has been a mounting effort to restore a two-party system to our district. Although there have been fleeting attempts in the past with the two-term election of Al Stabile, I feel that there is now a real growing momentum for a fair, competitive, and equitable political system; and away from the one that has dominated without any opposition at all. The Rockaway Republicans are a welcomed organized and growing group of residents who feel that it is not only time for a change, it’s time for a choice. The club, which meets each month at the Belle Harbor Yacht Club, was founded by a small group of respected residents who were discontented with our current Republican representation; or rather, lack of representation. The club now boasts an active membership of several hundred; and with over five thousand registered Republicans throughout the district, there is tremendous potential for growth.
Among the club’s iniatives is to unseat Anthony Weiner and elect local resident Jerry Cronin to Congress. Mr. Cronin is also endorsed by the Conservative, as well as the Independence Party. I thoroughly agree with and encourage their mission for a two-party system. Rockaway needs a choice. Visit the club’s impressive website: Rockawayrepublic ans.com for more information. Even if you’ve never voted Republican before, there are many “recovering” Democrats whom have switched their party for this initiative. Join them!
I am pleased to announce that the Board of Directors of The Rockaway Homeowners and Residents Association will host a General Meeting of its membership at The Beach Club on Wednesday October 13 at 7:30pm. We are delighted to have invited as our Guest Speakers: Joanie Omeste, Executive Director of The Rockaway Chamber of Commerce who will give a presentation on the status of Tribute Park, the success of the Doe Fund, and the B.I.D.(Business Improvement District) initiative. Ms. Omeste will be joined by Thomas Palittino, President of TWFM Ferry Corp., whom we expect will present his proposal for a viable Ferry service in our area. On behalf of the board of directors, I am pleased to announce our slate of honorees whom we will fete at our Holiday Party. They are: NYFD Battalion Chief Peter Hayden, Councilman Joseph Addabbo, and City Council Rockaway Representative Sandee Doremus. Congratulations to these esteemed individuals who have given so much to enhance our quality of life. This year, our Holiday Gala will be held at The Knights of Columbus on December 11 from 7 until 11 pm.. Tickets are $50. and may be purchased individually or in tables of ten. The evening will include a cocktail hour, open bar, hot buffet, coffee and cake. Entertainment will be provided by the popular Deacy and Casey Band. Since the event is always high on the social calendar, we anticipate that tickets will sell-out fast. They will be available on October 1st. Contact John Lenihan for details.
The Chamber of Commerce will host its annual fete on Wednesday, November 17 at Russo’s on-the-Bay. This year, the chamber is proud to honor Les Lerner, President of The Beechwood Organization and Al Benjamin of The Benjamin Development Organization, Developers of Arverne By-The-Sea; Councilman Joseph Addabbo, Democratic District Leader and Trinity Senior Services Founder Dr. Geraldine M. Chapey; and The Hanna Family of Brown’s Hardware. Contact the chamber for reservations.
