New Charter School Opens Doors At MS 53

On Monday, September 13, the Peninsula Preparatory Academy Charter School (“PPA”) opened its doors to serve 150 students in grades K-2. PPA is the first charter public school to open in Far Rockaway, and received approval from the New York State Board of Regents and the New York City Department of Education. At full capacity, the school is expected to serve 300 students in grades K-5. The school is located in MS 53 in Far Rockaway.

“The Peninsula Preparatory Academy Charter School will offer families in Far Rockaway an outstanding new public school option,” said State Senator Malcolm Smith, acting chair of PPA’s board of trustees. “We are creating a free, public school choice for families that will offer all children a high standard of academic excellence. To achieve this mission, we selected Victory Schools as our management partner based on its strong track record of success as New York State’s very best charter management organization.”

Victory currently manages New York State’s top-scoring charter school, Roosevelt Children’s Academy, and three of New York’s top ten charter schools, including three of the top six new charter schools serving high need student populations. Victory is also one of the highest performing school managers supporting Philadelphia’s groundbreaking school reform effort. PPA will use the highly successful Victory academic model and will offer an extended day, rigorous instruction, smaller class sizes and enrichment programs.

“We are proud to support Senator Smith and the Far Rockaway community in this effort,” said Carlo Schiattarella, director of development for Victory Schools. “We are also privileged to create this school in partnership with the New York City Department of Education and Chancellor Joel Klein. To be selected as one of the first new charter schools authorized by the Department is a great acknowledgement of the strength of the charter school’s board of trustees and the success of the Victory educational model.”

The Peninsula Preparatory Academy Charter School (“PPA”) is the first public charter school to be approved in Far Rockaway, Queens and one of the first new public charter schools to be authorized by the New York City Department of Education. PPA is a free public school open to all children through a random lottery admissions process.
