Venue Change For Community Board 14

The lights at the American Legion Hall might be on, but nobody will be home next Tuesday night when Community Board 14 meets – at the Knights of Columbus.

Next week’s 7:45 p.m. meeting, the first since June, will also be the board’s first at the K of C, their new home, at 333 Beach 90 Street. Jonathan Gaska, CB14 District Manager, called the move “the end of an era.” The legion, he recalled, was the site of nearly every important Rockaway meeting for at least the last 20-25 years because of two important attributes: size and central location.

The hall, located at 301 Beach 92 Street, was put up for sale at the end of March, its membership and revenue unable to afford the rising cost of maintenance, utilities and insurance. Where the Daniel M. O’Connell Post 272 American Legion members will meet when their hall is sold has not been decided.

The CB14 meeting will include reports from Gaska, Chairperson Delores Orr, the Transportation Committee and the Budget Committee; and an informational presentation by Reverend Les Mullings on a proposed health careers related charter high school in Rockaway.
