By Brian Magoolaghan

  • An out of control suspect wanted on sexual assault charges allegedly beat up five police officers, who he dared to shoot him, and damaged several vehicles while trying to get away in Edgemere last month, police said.
  • The wild incident began on the morning of August 25 when officers from the 101 Precinct were called to a third-floor apartment at 453 Beach 40 Street to investigate a sexual assault complaint. Police arrived at the apartment and found their stocky male suspect, whose name they are withholding, knocking on the door of the apartment.

The female occupants of the apartment, apparently in fear of their safety, refused to open the door until additional officers arrived on the scene. Police were finally able to interview the occupants once a lieutenant and sergeant arrived.

The suspect went berserk – punching one officer’s forehead with his fist – when officers learned that he was wanted in Pennsylvania on sexual assault charges and ordered him to put his hands behind his back. An officer Maced the man when began to flee the apartment building.

Police chased the suspect to the corner of Beach Channel Drive and Beach 40 Street – where he allegedly jumped into his red Jeep sport utility vehicle, rammed an NYPC Traffic Enforcement vehicle, crashed into several other cars and nearly ran over a group of officers as he exited his parking spot and headed east.

A description of the suspect and his vehicle went out over police radios and officers caught up with him on Beach 25 Street and Rockaway Freeway where he taunted them and screamed that they would have to shoot him in order to bring him in. The crazed suspect was Maced again before a team of officers went in to cuff him as he continued to fight and struggle.

Five officers were injured in the incident. They were treated at St. John’s Episcopal Hospital.

The suspect was charged with sexual assault and other assault, police said.
