Breezy Point Captures St. Francis Championship
The 2004 St. Francis Summer Classic concluded on August 25 with the Girls High School Championship. Breezy Point Lumber broke out to a 38-22 halftime lead and held off a spirited comeback by Sony to take the title 53-45. Tia Grant, Nicole Estrada and Katie Pastina all hit for double figures in the first half in a shooting display reminiscent of Villanova ‘85. Sony’s normally steady shooting abandoned them and only three 3’s from Kerrin Ann Jetter kept them in the game. The pendulum began to swing midway through the second half as Jen Kelleher scored inside and out to complement Jetter.
Sony cut the lead to five but that was as close as it got. Kelleher finished with 21 and Jetter 16 accounting for almost all the scoring. Nicole Estrada led Breezy Point Lumber with 16, Tia Grant 13, Katie Pastina 11, and Lisas Minetta 10. The champions were coached by Clare Droesch and Ryan Whelan and included: Anna Buzzetta, Corrine Howley, Kerri Gallagher, Kaitlin Marshall, Kelly Marshall, Maureen Carey, and Barbara Rudloff. Sony reached the final with a 47-41 win over ATP Insurance in Monday’s semi-finals. Christine Kinnery rallied ATP from a 20-11 halftime deficit and briefly took the lead but Jen Kelleher and Jill Brady came through with some clutch baskets to seal the victory. In the other semifinal, Tia Grant (16 points) and Lisa Minetta (18) teamed up to overcome an outstanding performance by Molly Tubridy to edge FDNY 45-41. Thanks to all for an outstanding season and we’ll see you next year.
