Volleyball Champs Crowned & Celebration Planned

By Joe McGivney

The Rockaway Beach Volleyball League concluded the summer schedule on Saturday 8/14 and congratulations go out to the five division winners: Ocean Division – Freedhand’s Court Champs, Wave Division – Fillmore Insurance, Beach Division – The Mahooshkas, Boardwalk Division – The Odd Couples, Sun Division – Vaughn’s Cheese Fries

Along with these five squads, a grateful nod must go to all of the sponsors of our record-setting 32 teams. Without their financial support the league might very well not exist.

A debt of gratitude is owed to the Wave for carrying our stories weekly. Their busy staff and Sports Editor, Elio Velez, always make time for us and make room for our tales of woe. On a different note, how about those Olympic gold medal winners, Misty May and Kerri Walsh! Rumor has it that they may join an Ocean division team next season, saying they want to play against the best possible competition.

2004 was a terrific season in spite of inclement weather on what seemed like every Wednesday night. Special thanks go out to Commissioner Patty Moule and her hard-working committee members, Keith Goldberg, Rocky Dorogoff, Steve Gifford, Denise Brunner, John Sica and Joe McGivney for their efforts. Much effort goes into planning and playing all of the matches each week and these folks do whatever it takes to get the job done. Although each member helps out wherever needed, responsibilities are divided up to maximize efficiency. Steve prepares and stores the equipment as well as copying and distributing announcement flyers and schedules. Rocky helps with the equipment and coordinates the Playoff Extravaganza and League Dinner, which seem to be getting better and better. Denise is our Social Committee head, contacting captains and bar owners to coordinate the party schedule each.

Keith “Bugsy” Goldberg watches the finances, orders uniforms and sweatshirts year and he helps Patty schedule referee assignments. He also supplies music free of charge whenever it seems needed. John is our resident Webmaster and photographer and one of our lead sportswriters with Joe, who heads the Competition Committee that sets up the divisions and playoffs. Having the right person for the right job has been a key factor in sailing smoothly through the summer. Imagine what the league would be like if Rocky and Joe reversed roles. Joe still doesn’t know how to put up a net and Rocky still can’t string two sentences together. It would be a very different league.

These folks are not the only ones working to make things happen. Thanks, also, to everyone who volunteered his or her time along the way. You may have thought your contribution was tiny but it was much appreciated. Thanks to the captains for representing your teams and being available to pass information to your teammates whenever it had to be sent along. You exemplify the teamwork and camaraderie that make the league such fun. Without your assistance, we couldn’t do it.

Patty would like to send hugs and kisses of thanks to her family, Simon, Alex, Lauren and Julia for putting up with all of the distractions at home during the year. The rest of us appreciate you letting us “borrow” Patty from you. Her tireless efforts have resulted in four of the finest seasons the RBVL has ever experienced.

Patty’s calm, cool demeanor handles all controversies smoothly and her steady application of good old common sense always seems to lead to a good decision.

Another group of people that go unnoticed but are indispensable are the referees. You may have disagreed with a call or two along the way but that’s incidental. The bigger picture shows a staff of professional, dedicated, friendly, courteous men and women who are an integral element to our success.

Long-time veteran referees include Bob Antonelli, Jackie Babich, Tony Carty, Mario DeLuca, Rich Howard, Cathy Kenny, Jerry Napo, Mike Periano, Craig Samu, Ed Savage, Alan Zarrow, Al Zawada and the man known as “Coach”, Bob Schwartz. Newer editions to the fold are Dave Mitchell, Cecilia Syvertsen, Evan Rabinowitz, Matthew Resnick and the Brooklyn crew as well as Megan Dolan and her gang, including Kelly, Sabrina and Bridgette. All did a superb job and hopefully will be back next year, red cards and all.

The League Dinner is fast approaching. It is scheduled for Friday night, September 17th at 8:30 p.m. at the Beach Club. One of the great party bands of all time, Head Over Heels, will provide live music. Of course, you will provide the dancing. Admission is $60 and will include a buffet dinner as well as an open bar.

Many people have already responded, paid for their tickets and formed tables so please RSVP as soon as possible to Rocky at 718-338-3951, Denise at 718-474-2512 or Bugsy at 917-680-3891.

Get your money to your captains (or Rocky or Denise or Bugsy) quickly. Talk it up so that we can make this year’s event even better than last year’s (if that is possible). After the big dinner-dance you can take six months off and not think about volleyball until February, when the planning begins for 2005.

We hope to see everyone back for another go at this sport we love so much. You’re what make the league so great! The games are over but summer is not, so we’ll still see you on the beach. (Maybe at the Michelle O’Neill tournament in Long Beach on Saturday 9/11.)
