The Graybeards, in conjunction with the New York Blood Center, will sponsor a blood drive on Sunday, September 12, 2004 from 7:30 AM to 1:30 PM. The drive will be held in the gym at St. Francis de Sales School, located on Beach 129 Street in Belle Harbor.

Based in Rockaway Beach, the Graybeards is a non-profit, community philanthropic organization that was formed to support its community after the September 11th terror attacks and the crash of American Airlines flight 587. At its blood drive last year, the Graybeards collected nearly 250 pints of blood, and received a Gold Award from New York Blood Center as recognition of its blood donation efforts. The group is aiming for 300 pints this year.

Queens is currently under an emergency appeal for blood donations. As a result of a 20% shortfall in blood donations in July, officials at New York Blood Center (NYBC) have announced deeper cutbacks of blood deliveries to local hospitals by 10% to 25%. Queens also has a particular dilemma because local hospitals use nearly 60,000 pints of blood each year; yet only 22,000 pints are collected from volunteer blood donors. Without a fresh supply of regularly replenished donations, cancellations of elective and scheduled surgeries and even emergency room closures are very real possibilities.

New York metropolitan hospitals need over 2000 pints of blood per day to meet the needs of cancer patients, accident victims and people facing surgery and other medical problems. Eligible donors must be age 17-75 (76+ with a doctor’s note), weigh at least 110 pounds and be in general good health. All donors benefit from a free mini medical exam including review of their pulse rate, blood pressure, iron count and temperature. Blood can be donated every 56 days.
