Nikita Johnson-Ortiz, five-years-old, is ready for her first year of school. She shows off the list of school supplies she and her mom Elizabeth were given after they completed Nikita’s registration for kindergarten.
As parents and children head in for registration, workers continue to put the finishing touches on Rockaway’s newest elementary school – P.S. 253 at 1307 Central Avenue in Far Rockaway.
P.S. 253 will open on September 8. According to Department of Education reports from June, the 704-seat school is expected to open with an enrollment of 285 students.
Registration at the pre-k through grade 5 school began on August 21. It will continue on weekday mornings from 9 a.m. to noon.
Hector Navarro, who will be turning 5 in a few months, is ready for kindergarten as he holds up some of his registration papers after leaving the school with his mom Wanda.
