Police Look For Kid-Luring Creep

Children and parents in Broad Channel say a strange man, driving a green Ford Taurus or Mercury Sable, has been trying to lure young girls into his car for the past few weeks – and police are on the lookout.

“He’s trying to call kids over to his car,” said Ed O’Hare, president of the community’s United Community Organization.

Officers from the 100 Precinct were first alerted on August 10 when a resident reported an incident on 13 Road, but the details and the description are sketchy. A police source said officers are looking for a male Hispanic, age unknown, driving a Taurus or the identically styled Sable. Police are also unsure if last week’s incident is isolated or part of a pattern.

“We have heard that there were other incidents but only one has been reported,” the police source said.

O’Hare told The Wave he has heard several reports from parents over the past few weeks, with the description of the suspect remaining consistent yet vague. O’Hare said the man is usually seen between 11:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. and that the man has been spotted on 13 Road, by the park on 17 Road and just last Saturday on East 6 Road. A frightened mother called her husband, who raced home, in the last incident, according to O’Hare. The suspect was gone by the time the husband arrived.

Police have asked for anyone with information to call the 100 Precinct Detective Squad and to dial 911 in an emergency.
