Kids and adults alike will find lots to do at the New York Kite Festival, which will be held at Riis Park this weekend. High-flying fun for the entire family!

That’s what the Rockaway Chamber of Commerce is promising those who attend this weekend’s New York Kite Festival.

The Kite Festival at the Rockaways will be held on August 21 and 22 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day at Jacob Riis Park’s Bay 9 and is free to the public.

The opening ceremony kicking off the festival will be held on Saturday, August 21 at 11:00am at Jacob Riis Park Bay 9.

Chamber officials promise that there will be lots to do at the festival for both adults and children.

Kitemaking workshops will be held at the Children’s Kite Camp, sponsored by Arverne by the Sea. Kids will learn to design, create, and then fly their own kites. Thrilling competitions, kite-flying exhibitions beautifully orchestrated to music and performers will entertain the thousands of people expected to attend.

The New York Stunt Kite Championships, sponsored by Newsday, features top sport kite fliers from around the country competing in this Eastern League Sport Kite Association event. The Championships feature twenty separate competitions held over two days. Events are divided into ballet (flight choreographed to music) and precision categories.

One of the most exciting things to watch is the Masters Team Ballet, where three or more competitors choreograph a flight routine with each other to a musical score.

Visitors to the New York Kite Festival will see spectacular and colorful ground displays by regional kite clubs, fighter kite competitions and brilliantly colored giant kites flying high over the festival grounds and visible for miles around.

The New York Kite Festival is produced by the Chamber of Commerce of the Rockaways and Sky Festivals, Inc. The festival is sponsored by Councilman Joseph P. Addabbo, Jr., American Airlines, Arverne by the Sea, Gateway National Recreation Area, New York Community Bank, Newsday and The Port Authority of NY & NJ.
