The Rat is Back

Councilman James Saunders, Local 32BJ members, community supporters and a large blow-up rat gathered at 249 Beach 15 Street Wednesday to demonstrate and demand that Allied Properties LLC rehire 12 building service workers.

The workers lost their jobs last month when Allied acquired three sights in Brooklyn, and laid them off.

Allied’s failure to hire the workers violates the Displaced Building Service Worker Protection Act, which guarantees building service workers protection against layoffs for 90 days after a building is sold or a cleaning contractor is changed.

The demonstrators also demanded that the workers be paid for lost work days.
