Rockaway Relay For Life Celebrates Success

The American Cancer Society’s (ACS) Relay for Life of Rockaway celebrated the success of June’s overnight event on Tuesday evening with its Fourth Annual Wrap-up Event at the Beach Club.

Almost 90 people heard Joann Shapiro, chair of Rockaway’s Relay for Life and a survivor, announce that this year over $67,000 was collected for ACS. During the four years of the relay more than $250,000 has been raised.

Survivors were honored with applause, as were caregivers at the wrap-up. Among those recognized for their work were captains of teams who raised $2,000, and five teams who collected $4,000.

Team captains in the $2,000 club – Dolores Orr (Rockaway Beach Civic Association), Dianne Gaertner (First Congregational Church), a representative of the Shape-up team, Jeannine Stathis (Debbie’s Dream Team) and Vickie Backus (Victoria’s Secret) were awarded tee-shirts in appreciation of their achievements. Not pictured are Joann Dougherty (Cross Country Cares) and Rachael Ecock (Aggie’s Angels Team).
