Monster Cave-ins Grow For Weeks In Rockaway

This cave-in, on Beach 108 Street between the Rockaway Freeway and Rockaway Beach Boulevard, has been threatening to swallow vehicles for weeks. City workers spray-painted a ring around it but have not been back since. The massive hole was photographed shortly after a Green Line bus, which was turning onto Beach 108 Street, knocked over the barricades.

Another giant cave-in has been hiding between parked cars on the west side of Beach 108 Street, between Mickey Carton Way and Shore Front Parkway, since July. Huge cave-ins, such as this one on Seagirt Avenue and Beach 3 Street, have sprung up in several spots in Rockaway, but the Department of Environmental Protection, the city agency responsible to fix the hazardous road condition, has been slow to respond. Far Rockaway resident Francis Suppa, who brought in this photograph, says the pothole has been growing sine June. You can report cave-ins and potholes by calling 311.
