Former Rockaway residents, Andy and Nicole Burns, now living in San Diego, celebrated their daughter Gabrielle’s sixth birthday with grandparents, Mary and Willie Burns of Belle Harbor, friends, Julie Matuozzi (my daughter-in-law) and my granddaughter, Elizabeth Ann (Beth) Matuozzi who will be 2 years old August 4. Current Breezy Pointers, Bill Genoese on July 24, Kay Salica, July 25 and Betty Slavin will be 83. Congratulations to all.
You don’t have to go further than the shores of Breezy Point to find a war zone. Met two Gays (mother and daughter) Noreen and Jean Gay sauntering to the ocean without hats. It is very brave, but not sensible, to walk through Piping Plover’s nests unprotected…especially when they told me about their cousin, Kevin Slavin, who last year, was hit on the head by a piping plover. As he was riding his bike to the beach, Slavin was attacked and fell off the bike causing injury to his arm which is still scarred today. This year he wore an orange hat to the beach and four or five plovers pecked at his head unmercifully. Moral of the story: Do Not Wear Bright Orange To The Beach If You Walk Through The Plovers Nests. Do be careful and do wear a wide brimmed hat just in case they come too close. Even a beach chair over one’s head can give protection. However, the two Gays walked through the line of fire. Noreen Gay told me she was born on the Lakes of Killarney, “the most beautiful spot in Ireland,” according to her. Is that where she gets all her spunk?
In a note from Gloria Liantonio, originally from Belle Harbor, she wrote that she is living in Little Club since 1993 and that her daughter and niece, Carol Liantinio and Angela DeVincengo graduated from my Alma Mater, Ladycliff College. All of them still get the Rockaway papers including her daughter and husband Ed who were also residents of Belle Harbor. We are always happy to hear how people love to keep in touch with their hometown.
George Angle and his girlfriend, Diana Felicessiamo just returned from a great trip to Gloucester, Essex, Rock Port and Salem, (known for witches), Mass. They found the Crow’s Nest Hotel for only $65 per room per night (leave it to George). The hotel is more affordable than the B&B’s...and they had great fun touring around the fascinating and historical Massachusetts.
With the summer season upon us the wants and needs of summer apparel, flip flops in all colors, surfboards, leases and sundry gift items are only a few footsteps away behind the ballfield at the Breezy Point Surf Shop, where prices can’t be beat. For Coop members, you don’t have to go off the premises. And, for those outside the property, stop at the Gate, get a token, enter at the Tennis Court Gate and follow around. Free parking for all within an hour’s shopping. Check it out. You will be glad you did. Owner, Donald Ritter and his girlfriend Casey are waiting to take care of you.
Thank you for the hair compliments. I owe it to Leana at Studio J who keeps my locks trim. And, thank you, thank you also for mentioning to me how well I look. It must be my non-surgical Invisilift facelift. No pain, no discomfort, no downtime, anxiety, stress or invasive procedure. It is just a very pleasant experience that is really getting results. In fact my cameraman even noticed the improvement last week. Dr. Kelly O’Malley-Matone is the physician who operates the ultra sound procedure in her office in Great Neck, a block from the LIRR.
The Make a Wish Foundation that grants children with life threatening diseases their most desired wish held a beautiful fund raiser at the Steel Case on Columbus Circle with a silent auction, white grape martinis and very special generous guests.

Caught the Broadway Show, “Forever Tango” that went on forever. The musicians were superb, just marvelous, but the costumes and dancers were disappointing. They appeared awkward and not as smooth as should be expected.
It has a limited engagement at the Schubert Theatre until Aug. 29. If you get to see it let me know your opinion.
The International Dragon race and festival took place July 31 to Aug. 1 at 79 St. and Riverside Drive Boat Basin. The boat race, consisting of top teams from all over Canada, Great Britain and the USA will tested their abilities on the Hudson River. They also had a gathering for Breast Cancer survivors. Other festival events included martial arts demos, traditional dragon and lion dances and musical performances, folk dances and live bands, plus a feast of International foods. The FDNY put on a firewater display and an exciting awards presentation at 4:30pm.
At the Park Central Hotel, food, music and colorful entertainment by the talented dancers and singers of Malaysia. This is truly an exotic country and very fascinating, which encompasses many Asian cultures. The three-day events most certainly increased the desire to visit this very beautiful country. They have flights from JFK and Newark.
