Basketball Players Star At Stella Maris Summer Camp
Stella Maris High School hosted its 7 th Lady Flipper Basketball Camp during the week of July 5th. Eighty campers, in grades ranging from 3rd thru 9th, took to the courts. These young, dedicated athletes showed an eagerness to learn, enthusiasm, spirit, sportsmanship and their sense of humor.
Each day is geared toward a specific goal: shooting, defense, ball handling, moving without the ball and post play. The “WNBA” (6th –9th) is geared toward more advanced skills and motivated to try their hand at different positions. The “NCAA” includes players new to the game and then some “seasoned” CYO/AAU competitors. Skill-specific drills are offered to enhance each camper’s experience.
Every day ends with SM’s “Ride the Wave” shooting challenge. Players need to hit 3 shots to win 3 prizes. Quite a few sharpshooters were in attendance this year and walked off with either gift certificates or basketballs generously donated by Carvel’s (SM alum Jeanne Andrews Kamin ’80), Sammy’s (on 129th) and Rogoff’s (on 116th).
And how do you supply continuous iced water for over 120 people? You thank your lucky stars that the Blackwater Inn (SM alum Ellen Cahill McDonagh ’93) is so accommodating.
