Droesch Hits Jumper To Clinch DJ’s Trophy

The Women’s Open division of the St. Francis Summer Classic concluded on Thursday, July 29 with a championship game for the ages. Tied at 55 with under a minute remaining, Clare Droesch (Boston College) dropped in a long three pointer to give DJ’s @ Work the lead. Bethany LeSeur (Georgetown) then tried to take it to the hole for Wantagh Inn but was cut off by the DJ’s defense.

Joephine Alohan of DJ’s was fouled on successive possessions and calmly drained four free throws. Wantagh never scored again and DJ’s @ Work took the trophy 62-55. Clare Droesch was spectacular for DJ’s @ Work with Tricia Tubridy (Harvard) complementing. Catherine Tubridy, Annie Egan, Caitlin Kennedy, Josephine Alohan, Kristin O’Grady, Jamie Buttner and Megan Bethel all contributed solid performances to round out the DJ’s playlist. Bethany LeSeur, Kim MacMillan and Meghan Moran led the way for Wantagh Inn.

The championship game was nearly matched for excitement by the first semifinal the previous night between DJ’s @ Work and Summer Classic veterans, The Young Mothers. In a game that originally began on Tuesday, Grace Kelly Leahy, Kerry Hanley O’Grady, Christine Fryer Paprocky, Sue Radday Murphy, Denise Hammersley Andersen and company showed the form that made them among the greatest players of the 90’s in NYC.

Starting fresh on Wednesday, the Young Mothers hit on all cylinders and held the lead most of the game before Droesch and company squeezed out a two-point win at the end before a packed house. Wantagh Inn followed with a win over Adelphi, setting up Thursday’s championship. DJ’s @ Work then hosted a league party thanking Commissioner Kenny Whelan as well as Roseann Whelan and Keith ‘Bugsy’ Goldberg for their efforts in making the St. Francis Summer Classic the finest women’s league in the metropolitan area.

In other Summer Classic action, Boys High School and Boys Grammar Senior playoffs are underway and will play their championships on Monday, August 9.

The Boys Grammar Middle and Girls Grammar Senior divisions begin playoffs that same night and finish with their championships on Thursday, August 12.

Mens Open League playoffs began on Thursday August 5 and end on Thursday, August 12. Girls High School action began on Tuesday, August 3 and will continue throughout the month with the championship on Wednesday, August 25.
