O’Connell’s Last Chance For Olympic Spot

Former Rockaway Resident Denise (Dee) O’ Connell will have her final chance to qualify for the Olympics Sunday when she competes in the javelin event at the Olympic Training Center in Chulavista, California.

O’Connell finished in third place in the javelin throw at the U.S. Track And Field Olympic Trials held in Sacramento on July 11th. O’Connell ‘s highest throw was 54.05 meters and finished third behind Sarah Malone and Kim Kreiner. To meet the Olympic standard, O’Connell must throw 60 meters or 198 feet before the August 9 deadline.

O’Connell will have 12 chances to qualify for the Olympic standard and is battling for one of the last two spots on the U.S. team. At 5 p.m.

“I had a little bit of a dead arm today”, O’Connell said . “I’ll leave it all out there on Sunday and I’ll just throw the hell out of it”.
