Maureen A. Barry

Coached Girl’s Track

Maureen A. Barry of Far Rockaway, who lived in Rockaway all of her life, died on July 30.

A homemaker, Barry was a parishioner at St. Mary’s Star of the Sea Church in Far Rockaway and was a coach of the church’s girl’s track team. She was also a member of the Rosary Society at the church.

She was predeceased by her husband, John T, Barry.

She is survived by her son, John Barry and three daughters, Maureen Hubschmitt, Christine Mangan and Jane Spezio. She is also survived by three sisters, Genevieve Capone, Patricia Fromel and Bernadette Maurino and one brother, Steve Hannigan. She is survived as well by eight grandchildren.

Interment will be at Calverton National Cemetery under the direction of Denis S. O’Connor Funeral Home.

Janette DiResta

Raised In Rockaway

Janette DiResta, (nee, Paladino) who was born and raised in Rockaway Beach, died at her home in Tampa, Florida on July 28.

DiResta was predeceased by her husband, Carlo DiResta and a daughter, Donna Giordino.

She is survived by her sons, Michael and Robert and by her daughter, Darlene. She is survived as well by her grandchildren, Christina, Christopher, Lynette, Ciara, Vincent, Anthony, Nicholas, James and Sean, and by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and in-laws.

Esmie Urisa Joseph

Home Care Aide

Esmie Urisa Joseph, who lived in Rockaway for 30 years, died on August 2 at the age of 70.

A home care aide for many years, Joseph was born in Plaisance, Guyana.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Richard Alexander Daniels and Mildred Charles-Daniels.

She is survived by her brothers, Lionel, Cecil, Winston, George (Frankie), Rudolph, Lennox and Reuben; by her sisters, Hyacinth (Marva) and Brenda Benfield; by her sisters-in-law, Doreen, Janet, Eileen, Gloria, Jillian, Marceline and Jean; by her brother-in-law, Louis; by her aunts, Sheila Sandiford, Inez De Florimonte, Mildred and Eileen Charles and Una Bishop and by her uncle, Neville Charles.

Interment was at Pinelawn Cemetery in Farmingdale, New York under the direction of Jeremiah C. Gaffney Funeral Home.

Kevin Deshea McPhaul

Untimely Death

Kevin Deshea McPhaul, 23, died on July 31 as a result of a gunshot wound received in a multiple shooting incident in Edgemere.

A courier, McPhaul lived with his grandmother.

He is survived by his parents, Tina Marie Robinson and Thomas Smallwood; his grandparents, Doris Rochester, Norman Smallwood and Ethel Smallwood; his stepfather, Benjamion Tillet; his great-grandparents, B.T and Mrs. Smallwood; by his brothers, Joseph, Franklin, Lancelot, Jamel and Rhamel; by his sisters, Marcella and Paradise; by his uncles, Albert, Norman, Jr., Robert, Damion, Kurt, Anthony Vernon, Hank and Eric; by his aunts, Ernestine, Thelma, Evelyn, Jasmine, Debra, Rene, Sheila, Lisa and Khadijah; by his cousins, Ebony, Ivory, Bailey, Iman, Damion, Jr., Shantel, Myassis, Infinite, Lasheena, Rasheena, Melone, James, Michael, Crystal, Lil, Shawn, Cheri, Alexander, Briana, Omar, Jamar, Ray, Jr., Rayasia, Malik, Jaypuan, Jasmin, Reggie, Albert, Jr., Terrell, Bernard, Jr., China, Greene, Kevin, Darryl, Jr., Kalonie, Eternity, Akeia, Shamia, Samad and Gina; and by his nieces, Jartina and Lil Marcella and by his nephews, Joseph, Jr. and Joseph L.

Interment will be at the Amityville Cemetery under the direction of Jeremiah C. Gaffney Funeral Home.

Anna M. Pagano

Owned Boulevard Cleaners

Anna M. Pagano, who lived in Rockaway for all of her 91 years and once owned Boulevard Cleaners, died on August 2.

Pagano was a parishioner at St. Rose of Lima Church and a member of both the Young At Heart and the Golden Age clubs.

She was predeceased by her husband, Pasquale J. Pagano and by her son, Mark Pagano.

She is survived by her daughter, Pagricia Reidlinger and by two sisters, Josephine Debaum and Lucy Musillo. She is also survived by 2 grandchildren.

Interment will be at Long Island National Cemetery under the direction of Denis S. O’Connor Funeral Home.

Elsie Kupper Read

Born In Rockaway

Elsie Kupper Read, who was born in Rockaway and lived here until 1954, died on July 9 at the age of 85.

Read attended PS 114 and Far Rockaway High School and graduated from Hunter College. She received a master’s degree from Columbia University. She was a homemaker. She had been living in Lakeland, Florida since 1968.

Read was a member of the First Congregational Church during her time in Rockaway.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Allison G. Read and her parents, Thomas V. Kupper and Elsie Kupper of Rockaway Beach.

She is survived by her children, Elizabeth (Betsy) Martin, Margaret Samos, and Thomas Read. She is survived as well by her brother, Thomas J. Kupper, six grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service was held in her honor in the chapel of the First Presbyterian Chirch in Lakeland, Florida.

Hazel E. Stachelski

Arverne Garment Worker

Hazel E. Stachelski (nee, Ward), a descendent of the founders of Hempstead on Long Island, died on June 6 at the age of 88.

A resident of Rockaway Beach for 25 years, Stachelski spent the second half of her life in Oceanside and was a member of that town’s senior center for 25 years.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Michael P. Stachelski, her parents, Thomas and Mary (nee, Rollberg) Ward, her sisters Gloria Weydig, Violet Carbone and Mabel Lechner and by three brothers, Oscar, Charles and Richard Ward.

She is survived by her daughters, Carolann Gaynor (and her husband, William), Alice Regan and by her son, Michael. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Christine, Denise Noble, Michael, Patrick and by great grandchildren Kenneth Gilloon and Regan-Grace Stachelski.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Towers Funeral Home in Oceanside. Interment will be at St. Mary’s Star of the Sea Cemetery in Lawrence.

John F. Tuffy

Insurance Manager

Belle Harbor Activist

John J. Tuffy, who was a Belle Harbor resident for more than 30 years, died on July 23 at the age of 76.

Tuffy, a long-time parishioner at St. Francis de Sales Church, was an usher and an effective advocate for his community as the treasurer of the Belle Harbor Property Owners Association. He was the organization’s zoning chairperson as well.

For the last three years of his life, Tuffy lived in Dominican Village, a retirement village in Amityville, New York where he volunteered his time to teach English to Spanish immigrants.

He served his nation with the Army’s 45th Division during the Korean Conflict.

Tuffy was preceded in death by his mother, Bridget, his father, John Tuffy and his sister, Marion Tuffy.

He is survived by many good friends in both the Belle Harbor community and in Dominican Village.

Interment was at the St. Charles Cemetery in Amityville under the direction of the Powell Funeral Home.

Henry Wise

Far Rockaway Resident

Henry Wise, a long-time Far Rockaway resident, died on July 26 at the age of 73.

Born in South Carolina, Wise came to Rockaway many years ago to raise his family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ada Johnson and John Henry Wise.

He is survived by his wife, Cora Wise, three daughters, Henrietta, Dale and Roseann, one son, Joseph, all of Far Rockaway.

In addition, he is survived by four sisters, Frances Young, Johnnie M. Johnson, Mary Walker, and Johnnie M. Owens and by six brothers, James Wise, Heyward Johnny, Horace, Peter Johnson and Wyman Brooks.

He is also mourned by 10 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandson.
