Jamaica Bay Clean Sweep Project

Last week, the American Littoral Society and Jamaica Bay EcoWatchers initiated this season’s “Operation Jamaica Bay Clean Sweep” by removing a derelict boat ramp from the marsh. Starting this week, they will be removing about a dozen abandoned boats from the shorelines of the bay with help from Gateway National Recreation Area and the Port Authority of NY/NJ at JFK Airport. The project will culminate on September 18th when large numbers of volunteers are expected to conduct cleanups around the bay as part of International Beach Cleanup Day. To volunteer call Barbara Cohen at (718) 471-2166.
