With hurricane season approaching, this past week generated big waves bringing out surfers from all over New York, including the younger crowd of up and coming riders as well.

With Sunday and Monday forming overhead swells, it was not just the older surfers paddling out, but surfers as young as 11-years-old like Charles Riley.  “I was surfing since I was six,” said Riley. “It is awesome when the waves are big.” With large waves and a strong current making it lot of work to get out, the younger surfers showed what it is all about to work for the big rides as others in the water took notice.

“I love watching the younger kids out here,” said surfer Tim Rollins. “It reminds me of when I was kid out surfing.” As the waves broke outside for most of the days that were big this past week, the younger crowd did everything they could to fit in wit the rest of the surfers. “I was not dropping in on anyone,” said 12-year-old rider, James Matthews. “I was surfing with everybody, having fun.”

With around 10 surfers under the age of 18 out on Sunday, the experience of riding looked to branch out to a younger demographic as many of the older surfers on hand enjoyed the younger company.  “It is like looking back at different time,” said Jim Cohen, “when there were no worries except the waves.”

Next week shows that waves on the weekend looks undeveloped, Monday looks to be sloppy in the afternoon and choppy waves will be coming from waist to chest after Tuesday. The rest of the week should increase from Wednesday on into the weekend.

“I will be there when the waves are big again,” said Riley. “I can’t wait.”
