Rockaway Athletes Compete In Empire State Games
Governor George E. Pataki today announced the opening of the 2004 Empire State Summer Games. The 27th Summer Games will run July 28 through August 1, 2004 in Binghamton. Since their inception, the Games have grown to be one of the largest amateur state-sponsored athletic programs in the nation.
This year, Summer Games athletes number over 6,000 and represent all six regions of New York State. The Games feature 28 Olympic-style events, in which athletes participate in the scholastic, open or masters division.
These are some of the athletes from the Rockaways that will be representing the New York team: Derek Davis II in the Scholastic Men’s FITA All Around, Dylan Dombrowski in the Scholastic Men’s Decathlon, Brianne Fuchs in the Scholastic Women’s Javelin and Tiffany Bryant in the Scholastic Women’s Basketball Tournament.
Events for the 2004 Games include: men’s and women’s basketball, rugby, tennis, boxing, volleyball, softball, baseball, ice hockey, diving, swimming, synchronized swimming, weightlifting, gymnastics, track and field, soccer, sailing, cycling, canoe/ kayaking, lacrosse, judo, archery, wrestling, bowling, shooting, field hockey, fencing, golf and rowing.
