Historical Views of the Rockaways
From The Rockaway Museum

Dedicated To The Memory Of Leon S. Locke
At the latest international postcard bourse and after scrutinizing the wares of all the dealers present – for Rockaway postcards, yours truly began looking through stacks and groups of old photographs.
At times, a misplaced Rockaway photo turns up in cards and views of other places.
Such a misplaced photo was found in the Southern California collection of a dealer from the southwest. But Cities Services Gas Stations were in the northeast section of the United States; there is not a palm tree in sight anywhere; the houses shown are not California style architecture; I recognize the shingle patterns on the house at the right; and with a strong magnifying glass – New York license plates are on the autos.
Test your memories folks! Here are a few clues to help you:
The camera is facing northwest and is standing on ___ Boulevard. Beach ___ Street is on the right, Beach ___ is on the left, and behind the gas pumps is ___Drive, and ___Basin is beyond the houses in the background. The service station was in the ___ section of the Rockaways. The year is 1940, and the brick apartment house in the back of the garage is on Beach ___ Street.
Answer next week. Tune in.
