Broad Channel Bits

Half of the summer has whizzed past already. Maybe August won’t have too many “dog days.” So far, it has been a great summer-not many very hot days…and lots of wonderful Mardi Gras activity!

On a Mardi Gras note, Grassy’s has dinners on Thursday nights. Eat in or take out. Call 718 474-1688 for weekly dinners, delivery.

A Texas Hold ‘Em will be held on Sunday, August 1 at the American Legion Hall, 209 Crossbay Blvd. Registration will be held at 2 p.m. Buy In for $100; there is limited seating. To reserve a seat call Duffy’s at 718 318-2300. All proceeds to BCVFD.

Duffy’s Irish Pub will present “An Irish Wake” on Saturday, August 14. From 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. will be The Viewing; at 8:30 will be The Funeral Procession. Then it’s back to Duffy’s for “live” music, singing, bangers (Irish sausages), and Fun! Buckets will be available. Cover charge is $5. All proceeds to benefit BCVFD. 

Most Popular Block candidate East 8 Road has a lot of activity planned! They will have Bingo on Monday, August 2 at 1 p.m. Admission is $5. They are going to hold a Car Wash on Saturday, August 7 at East 8 Road and Cross Bay Blvd. The cost is $5. Their Cake Sale will be held on Sunday, August 8 in front of the firehouse.

Help support Hunter John for Baby Face, Mardi Gras 2004. Come to the Kids’ Fun Day on Sunday, August 1 at the Gene Gray Park on 9th Road from noon to 3 p.m. There will be lots of games and prizes. Have your picture taken with Sponge Bob Square Pants (he’ll arrive around 1). There will be Face Painting, Raffles and Contests. Refreshments will be available.  All proceeds to the BCVFD.

There will be a Bar-B-Q held at the VFW Hall on Saturday, August 7 from 2 p.m. till ???. Cost per person is $10.

One lucky person will win a Dell computer this summer! Tickets cost $5 each. Call Ginger for tickets at 718 318-5504.

All American Dogs have been busy! On Mondays and Wednesdays they have been at the 17th Road Park, selling tee shirts, raffles, chips, soda, bottled water and other food items.

Mardi Gras is really hopping! Duffy’s Irish Pub will be “Raisin Hell” on the Bay at the East 14th Road Back House on July 31 from 7 to 11 p.m. at $15 per person. Enjoy Live Music, A Cappella Show, beer, food. Buy tickets now at Duffy’s on Cross Bay Blvd. in Broad Channel. A limited number of tickets will be sold. Call 718 318-2300. All proceeds to BCVFD.

Bingo is coming and All American Dogs have picked a lucky date for it-Friday the 13th —of August. It will take place at the North Channel Yacht Club at 6 p.m. There will be over $900 in prizes.

Tickets are going fast-don’t get left out! Chances on the $10,000 Giveaway cost $100 each. To get tickets, call Ginger at 718 318-5504. Drawing will be at the firehouse on Friday night, September 3. There is over $14,000 in prizes.  

Dog Wash Day was very successful-it raised over $500 for BCVFD! So, All American Dogs are having another-it will be held at 1424 Cross Bay Blvd. on Sunday, August 8 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Dogs can have a flea bath and/or get their nails clipped while the cats can get their claws trimmed too.

The last summer Book Discussion will be held at the Library at 10 a.m. on Thursday, August 26. The novel, “Awakening” by Kate Chopin will be discussed.

The United Community Organization (UCO) asked me to remind residents of the upcoming land auction. It will be held on August 4. Call DCAS at 212 669-8888 for a brochure that lists the properties or visit the website at www.nyc.gov/dcas.

On Sunday, August 22 at noon at the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge there will be a NYC Audubon Shorebird Workshop. Don Riepe, Guardian of Jamaica Bay will lead this workshop to view plovers, peeps and other shorebirds. Participants should wear waterproof boots and bring binoculars. Reservations are required. The Broad Channel Library is asking for donations of new or good condition CD’s and DVD’s. They will be sent to the overseas troops as part of Operation Gratitude. Read more about the program on the internet at: www.opgratitude.com.

On Wednesday, August 11 at 2 p.m. the seniors will see Joseph and his Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat at Molloy College. At last report there were a couple of tickets still available. Call Teresa at 718 634-7799 or Winnie at 718 474-2783 to see if the tickets are still available.

Sunset Picnic Concert Series are held in Fort Tilden on the parade ground. The next concert will feature Celtic music by Cady Finlayson & Band and will be held on Sunday, August 8 at 6 p.m. Call 718 474-6760 for more information on the concert series and the indoor rain location.

Local artists who are members of Rockaway Artists Alliance will show their artworks in the 10th Anniversary Member Exhibit at Fort Tilden in sTudio 7.

The exhibit will open on Sunday, August 1 and run through Sunday, September 12.

It will be closed Labor Day Weekend, September 4 and 5.

The gallery will be open to the public and there is no charge for viewing the artworks. The hours on Saturdays are from noon to 5 p.m. and on Sundays from 1 to 5 p.m.

This summer there is blood donation at a site that is convenient and nearby. On August 8 the collection site will be Joseph Addabbo Family Health Center #1 at 67-10 Rockaway Beach Blvd. in Arverne from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
