Rugby Irish Fest Adds More Entertainment

By Bob Johnson

The Breezy Pt Catholic Club Pipes and Drums Band, (including special guests Ed “Big Daddy” Shevlin and Dennis Brady of the NYC Sanitation Emerald Society Pipes and Drums) has been added to the list of entertainment for Sunday’s Irish Fest at the rugby clubhouse (113 Street and Rockaway Beach Boulevard). Count on the Pipers being there at 2pm, right before the awards ceremony, which will be immediately followed by Shilelagh Law at 3pm and Seanchai and the Unity Squad at 6pm.

Word of the return of the Irish Fest is spreading like wild fire through the neighborhood as locals young and old have been chattering about the restoration of a great Rockaway tradition. Word has reached the far ends of Manhattan, the Bronx, and Yonkers, where both bands have a considerable following.

Many Rugby fans are also anxiously awaiting Sundays OldBoys/Young Boys game at Ft. Tilden (11a.m.). Rumor has it that a bounty has been put on the head of Rugby Clubhouse manager and controversial figure John “the grouch” McCann. When asked about the possibility of being under fire from the young guns, McCann scoffed at the notion and mumbled something about paying dues.

The boisterous young boys are counting on strong performances from many neighborhood neophytes including pretty boy brothers Brendan and Danny Lunny, Tom (I’m Not) French, Brendan” I own McCann” Fitzgerald, and 2 guys named Evil Ed and O.D. Rockaways most eligible man Tyronne Sperling has been lobbying for a spot on the young Boys side. Denying to himself and anyone else who will listen that he is on the edge of 30 and ready to fall off.

The well-established Old Boys Side has been confidently quiet, taking in all of the banter and making notes. Stay tuned.

Rugger Pluggers:

The wedding of George and Peggy was a gala event with many notables on hand. Everyone seemed to have a marvelous time except for Wayne Fox who spent most of the night flapping on a cell phone to his latest girlfriend; promising to behave and not fraternize with other women.

Duke Foti will not be in attendance this weekend due to a prior commitment. He wishes all the best to the Old Boys.

Message delivered from an unknown source: “Grouch McCann may be the most universally despised athlete since the fictional “Clubber Lang” in Rocky 3. His surly demeanor and poor interpersonal skills have placed him squarely in the crosshairs for this Sundays OldBoys/ oungBoys showdown.

Many a man who has been verbally assaulted by the Grouch will be seeking some measure of payback. The Grouch will need to keep his Stan Laurel-like head on a swivel for the entire match if he has any hope of walking away unscathed.”
