Ozone Beats Rockaway In Tough RLL Battle

Ozone Beats Rockaway In Tough RLL Battle

Rockaway’s Junior Softball Team lost a tough game last Sunday against Ozone/Howard by a score of 11-10.  Caroline Plunkett scored in the 1st on singles by Kerry King and Michelle Kenel.  Ozone/Howard scored 4 in the 1st, and 4 in the 2nd to lead by 8-1.  It wasn’t until the 3rd inning of play that the Rockaway defense came alive, holding Ozone/Howard to just 3 runs in the remaining 5 innings of play. Rockaway exploded in the 4th, scoring 6 runs on a triple by Michelle Kenel (who hit 2 of them!), double by Shinnann Featherston, and singles by Kerry King, Patricia Scherpf, Kristina Iudica, Kelly Carman and Heidi Zwick.

Rockaway added 2 more runs in the 6th on singles by Norah Marley and Kerry King, and a triple by Michelle Kenel.  Patricia Scherpf added 1 more run with a solo home run in the 7th to bring the score to 10.  Great pitching by Kerry King and Kristina Iudica kept Rockaway in the game, and swapped centerfield/pitching positions with each other.  Kelly Carman and Caroline Plunkett exhibited unbelievable base running/sliding.  The catch of the game may have been a running backhand by the centerfielder, Kerry King.  Chloe Meli & Tara Mullen took control of the remaining outfield.

Once the big bats of Rockaway started, Ozone/Howard found it hard to stop them.  Next game is Sunday, July 18 at 2:00 p.m. at Ft. Tilden. Come on down and support the Rockaway Girls! Let’s go Rockaway softball!
