Two men were arrested in Rockaway Park this week when residents spied them snipping hydrangeas on private property and loading the flowers into a nearby van, police said.

Brothers Daniel, 46, and Talmadge Leonard, 39, both of Port Jervis, were allegedly snipping the pretty pastel flowers at 120-10 Rockaway Beach Boulevard on Tuesday afternoon when residents spotted them and called the 100 Precinct. Officers arrested both men and confiscated their gray work van, which contained clipped flowers and garden shears.

"They’ve been doing this for years… they were caught – finally," said one resident who asked not to be identified. Police said that there have been other reports of flower theft throughout Rockaway, but were not sure if the Leonard brothers were responsible.

Both men face criminal trespass, criminal mischief, petit larceny and criminal possession of stolen property charges. They were awaiting arraignment on Wednesday.
