Sanit Nabs Three Dumpers, Impounds Vehicles

The Department of Sanitation’s Citywide Illegal Dumping Taskforce arrested three men in separate incidents and impounded their cars last month, Commissioner John J. Doherty announced this week.

Jose Alberto Mendez, of 58-21 Granger Street, Carona, was arrested after he allegedly dumped seven large bags filled with car tires at Beach 32 Street and Edgemere Road; George May, of 229 Mott Avenue, Inwood allegedly dumped four cubic yards of construction debris at 426 Beach 48 Street; and Mewlchiorre Caradonna, of 107-62 92 Street, Ozone Park, is accused of dumping six cubic yards of asphalt, sand and concrete on Beach 66 Street and Rockaway Beach Boulevard.

In each case the taskforce confiscated the defendants’ vehicles. In addition, the men will face fines, which start at $1,500 and range as high as $20,000 per summons. The men may also have to pay a clean-up cost of about $150 per cubic yard.

The commissioner urged residents who spot illegal duping to report it to the task force by calling 311.
