A “Take Back The Beach” protest demonstration led by Democratic District Leader Lew Simon drew approximately 350 local residents to the boardwalk at Beach 116 Street on Tuesday evening. Chanting “We love Rockaway,” and “Give us back our beaches,” the group listened to Simon and several others speak about the problems faced by Rockaway residents due to the restrictive beach and boardwalk rules. Pictured, Norman Siegel, attorney and former executive director of the New York Civil Liberties Union, listens to Simon speak to the crowd as a local with a sign gives his opinion of Parks Commissioner Adrian Benepe.
The crowd listens to the speakers.
Norman Siegel speaks with Norman Silverman, a Far Rockaway resident who assisted in setting up the rally.
Even the dogs in Rockaway have an opinion on the beach and boardwalk problem.
