After all the rain this past week, the green plants in some yards are so high they tower over the tallest folks. Of course, wonderfully sunny days with beautiful blue skies and puffy white clouds are the most in evidence of summer weather.
This year, the balance of sun and rain seems to be perfect for all the greenery in back and front yards!
In Mardi Gras 2004 East 8th Road is running for Most Popular Block. They will be holding a Car Wash on Saturday, July 17 from 9 a.m. till 4 p.m. at East 8 Road and Cross Bay Blvd.
At the VFW on Shad Creek Road will be Joe and Jimmy’s Bar-B-Q on Saturday, July 17 at 2 p.m.

The 10th Annual "It’s a Fluke" Tournament was held last Saturday July 10th at the Shad Creek Association.
A lot of fishing led to the following results: For the Biggest Fish there was a tie between Greg Henkel and Charlie Lehr with each man catching a 4.80 pounder. Henkel was on the Skipjack while Lehr was on Karen Lee. Marty Evans took 3rd place with a 4.45 pound fish. He was on the Sea Smoke. In the Total Weight of three fish, Eddie Hilgendorf, fishing from Not Bad, took 1st Place with a weight of 8.95 pounds. Jimmy Ott won 2nd Place with a weight of 8.15 pounds.
There was a largest Sea Robin Calcutta Winner in Russ Owen Andrus on the Lost Time, with a weight of 1.90 pounds.

The Broad Channel Athletic Club will host a Thank You party for Marty Feeney on Saturday, July 17 at the BCAC Memorial Field.
There will be music, food and drink at the Field at 4 p.m. that day.
Marty has retired from the NYPD and he and his family will be relocating to Florida.
All friends and neighbors from Broad Channel, Howard Beach and Rockaway are invited.
On Sunday, July 18 at 10 a.m. there will be a Butterfly Walk in Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge. Look for different types of butterflies and learn what they do and how important their role is in nature. The last summer Book Discussion will be held at the Library at 10 a.m. on Thursday, August 26. The novel, "Awakening" by Kate Chopin will be discussed.
There will be a Summer Bird Walk at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge on Saturday, July 24 at 9 a.m.
Bring binoculars, sun/insect protection, drinking water and lunch on this birding walk. Expert birders lead this group around the West Pond Trail to see a diversity of waterbirds, songbirds and shorebirds.

A four-session workshop of Beginner’s Quilting designed for children age 8 is in progress. The last two sessions will be held at the Library on Friday, July 16 and Monday, July 19 at 1 p.m. All materials for this workshop were provided by the Library.
The Broad Channel Library is asking for donations of new or good condition CD’s and DVD’s. They will be sent to the overseas troops as part of Operation Gratitude. Read more about the program on the internet at: www.opgratitude.com.

Sunset Picnic Concert Series are held in Fort Tilden on the parade ground. The next concert, Paul Taylor 2, a modern dance performance, will be held on Sunday, July 25 at 6 p.m. This past Sunday, A Tribute to the Big Bands by Danny Vincent Orchestra, appeared and drew a very large crowd! Local artists who are members of Rockaway Artists Alliance will show their artworks in the 10th Anniversary Member Exhibit at Fort Tilden in sTudio 7. The exhibit will run from Sunday, August 1 through Sunday, September 12, but will be closed Labor Day Weekend, September 4 and 5. The gallery will be open to the public and there is no charge for viewing the artworks.
