The girls of Papa’s Pizza, R.L.L. minor girl’s softball division, performed beautifully in the division playoffs game of 06-15-04, scoring 22 times on 18 hits and 10 walks.

Despite missing three regular infielders due to a school affair, Papa’s remaining 13 got the job done, (offensively noted earlier), with a superb defense holding Walsh to five runs scored during the third inning.

Cat Murphy did a terrific job pitching, picking up six strikeouts, holding to four walks and fielding one line drive and deeding first for three more outs. Annette Scotto playing first base covered it wonderfully; she charged the line to tag out 3 going for first.

Meredith Edelson, Mary Ameruso, Marissa Scotto, Lisa Pulkoski, Rosemary Burti, Jenna Hoffman and Briana Hart all demonstrated terrific heart at bat picking up ½ of the total runs and covering infield positions.

The final playoff game, held on 06-26-04 saw Papa’s Pizza come up against the division second place team. O’Grady’s Plumbing.

The coaching staff held multiple practices during the ten-day break and the girls responded beautifully. Prior to game time, the coaches, Bill Murphy, Elaine and Anthony Scotto, and Jim Hurley focused on quelling the jitters, and shoring up the confidence level; not surprisingly, with this group of gals, it took as each gave it 100%.

The first inning showing Meredith Edelson whack an infield double, followed by Cat Murphy’s single, and Becky Moers walk, loading the bases for Annette Scotto’s right center field shot, driving in 3 and scoring for the elusive grand slam!

Although rattled, O’Grady’s regrouped and shut down the remainder of first, and kept Papa’s bats quiet during the second. The Papa’s defense, however, held O’Grady’s scoreless throughout five innings, with the entire team maintaining terrific control of the ball. O’Grady’s four singles in the sixth yielded one run, but Papa’s picking up 4 additional runs in the third and fifth clinched their spot in the Championship with an 8-1 victory.

Congratulations to a great group of gals with plenty of "heart". More to come next week.
