The Gift is Love Girls’ Softball Team captured the Major Divison softball title last Saturday at Rockaway Little League. After placing a disappointing 4th in the regular season, the big bats of The Gift is Love finally came alive during the playoff season.

The first-round playoff game against Pickles n’ Pies showed that everyone would contribute in this championship season. Devin Nuszer started the 2nd inning rally with a huge single, followed by Kristi Memi hitting 2 triples, and Michelle Cashen hitting a home run. Unbelievable base running and sliding by Norah Marley, Kerry King, Lauren Spadero added to the victory.

The second –round playoff game against Harbor Optics proved to be a real battle. A huge 1st-inning rally started by Norah Marley, Krista Memi (each with doubles), Kerry King, Patricia Scherpf, Deirdre Sacca, Lauren Atwood, Lauren Spadero, Tara Mullen and Casey McCormack (each added another single hit) ended with 6 runs crossing home plate. Lauren Spadaro added another run in theh 4th, followed by 2 more runs by Norah Marley and Kerry King in the 5th. Deirdre Sacca pitched an unbelievable 7-inning game, allowing only 2 runs to score.

The final-round pitted The Gift is Love against a tough Papa’s Pizza team. 2 earlier season games had ended between these two teams in a tie, and a 1-run win for Papa’s Pizza. On the mound this game was Michelle Cashen , who pitched a great game, also allowing only 2 runs to score. The defense was superb, and again the hits came form everyone on the team. Nicole Casey started a huge rally in the 6th with her great hitting. Michelle Cashen, Lauren Atwood and Patricia Scherpf hit doubles, all scoring on great base running.

This is the 1st Championship won by this team. Many have played softball together since 2nd or 3rd grade. The players on this team have come a long way since their playing days of long ago. They are all great hitters and fielders, and show true sportsmanship whenever they play. Hopefully, many will go on to high school softball, and we’ll hear plenty about team in years to come.
