The New York Sharks will return to the IWFL Eastern conference Championship after destroying the Chicago Force, 40-0. The Sharks (8-0) will go against the Tampa Bay Terminators on July 10 to decide who will play in the IWFL women’s football championship.

The Sharks’ toughest opponent this season has been the Force. The first game this season was a 6-2 win for the Sharks in a mighty defensive battle. The Sharks won 27-7 after scoring two late fourth quarter touchdowns

In their third meeting, the Sharks figured out the defensive minded Force early and often on both offense and defense.

Sharks QB Val Halesworth connected with WR Kathy Holloman for a 94-yard touchdown run to take a 7-0 lead in the first.

The defensive stop of the game occurred later in the first quarter. On a fourth and inches at the Sharks 12, the Force could not convert as lineman Rose Addison stopped RB Heather Tang behind the first down marker.

It was the turning point of the game, as the Force’s confidence seemed to decline quickly thereafter. Sharks QB Val Halesworth would soon take advantage.

Halesworth completed the second of her four touchdown passes as she hooked up with Karen Mulligan to make it 19-0 with 10:35 in the second quarter.

Monica Marsh was on the receiving end of another Halesworth pass as her score made it 26-0 in the second quarter. The Sharks defense was on fire as they stymied the Force offense with 8 sacks and three interceptions for the game.

After Belle Harbor’s Lori DeVivio returned a Chicago punt to the Force’s 38-yard line, RB Missy Marmorale scored on a 25-yard run to give the Sharks an incredible 34-0 lead.

Halesworth finished the day completing 8 of 17 passes for 290 yards and 4 touchdowns. New York will take on the Tampa Bay Terminators, who finished 7-2 in the regular season and defeated the Atlanta Xplosion, 21-8 to advance.

Game Notes

The New York City Council honored the team by proclaiming June 28 as New York Sharks Day. The event took place at the City Council Chambers at City Hall.

The IWFL Eastern Conference Championship game will be played on July 10th at August Martin High School in Jamaica, Queens. Kickoff is at 5pm. General admission tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children and seniors.
