Once again, P.S. 183 is making a mark on music and this time it is within the Rockaway community. P.S. 183 won two 1st place awards at Lincoln Center Music Memory Competitions. This competition was held at Alice Tully Hall on May 10, 2004. On June 23, 2004, at 6:00 p.m. the two winning panels, along with the school band, and their after –school music program, presented a Spring Concert for the community.

Working in conjunction with Mr. Martin Penzer, the school’s music director, Mrs. Cerulli, and her third grade class performed an adaptation of "Pages of Music" by Tony Johnson. In addition, teachers Mrs. Girgenti and Mrs. Forem, included a choral group performance. It was a delight to see young children performing so well and with great enthusiasm.

Rockaway’s Music and Arts Council Director, Barbara Eisenstadt, families and supporters of P.S. 183’s Music Program were greatly welcomed for their commitment. Every one enjoyed a quality gala presentation of Beethoven, Recorder Instruction and Band music.

The children at P.S. 183 are so determined to succeed with music instruction that for the last month of school they had a competition that involved a can and bottle redeemable

contest. Each class strove to outperform the other in their collections to support the music department. They are seeking to maintain a continuous after school instrument program and for the last month of school raised over $300 to help purchase additional instruments for the school. The community has become overwhelmed by the commitment of these children to secure instruments.
