Lots Of Locals Graduate From Xavier High School

Xavier High School’s graduation, held on June 3 at St. Patrick’s Cathedral was an evening of "special pride and joy" for many Rockaway residents, according to a spokesperson for the school.

The school at 30 West 16 Street, added 206 young men to the ranks of its prestigious alumni.

The Xavier Class of 2004 continued the 450-year tradition of Jesuit Excellence as its members excelled in the areas of academics, athletics, co-curricular activities and service.

"The Rockaways should also be proud as many of their very own young men were among the scholarship recipients," the spokesperson said.


John Bernstein, Belle Harbor, was awarded forty five thousand dollars from Drexel University and forty thousand dollars from Northeastern University. John has chosen to attend the University of Delaware.

James DiMola, Rockaway Park, earned thirty two thousand dollars from Bentley College, forty eight thousand dollars from Fairfield University, twenty four thousand dollars from Loyola College in Maryland, forty thousand dollars from Manhattan College, twenty four thousand dollars from Sacred Heart University and twelve thousand dollars from SUNY Albany. James will be attending New York University in the fall.

Timothy Dufficy, Breezy Point, will be attending Iona College with a thirty six thousand dollar scholarship over four years. Timothy was also honored with twenty thousand dollars from Adelphi University, twenty four thousand dollars from Long Island University, twenty five thousand dollars from Hofstra University, six thousand dollars from St. Francis College, twenty thousand dollars from St. John’s University and thirty six thousand dollars from the University of Hartford.

Daniel Fazio, Rockaway Point, will be attending Pace University on a twenty thousand dollar scholarship


Brendan Fitzgerald, Belle Harbor, was honored with twenty thousand dollars to attend Belmont Abbey College. Brendan will attend West Virginia University in the fall.

Kevin Hartnett, Rockaway Point, will be attending Manhattan College with a thirty thousand dollar scholarship over four years. Kevin also received eight thousand dollars from Alfred University and thirty two thousand dollars from Western New England College.

Luke Hill, Neponsit, received eighteen thousand dollars from LaSalle University and sixteen thousand dollars from St. Joseph’s University in Pennsylvania. Luke will attend Quinnipiac College in the fall.

Daniel Lunny, Belle Harbor, was awarded twenty four thousand dollars from Belmont Abbey College and twenty eight thousand dollars from Iona College. Daniel will attend West Virginia University in the fall.


Brendan Murtagh, Belle Harbor, earned twenty four thousand dollars from Belmont Abbey College and thirty six thousand dollars from Iona College. Brendan will attend LeMoyne College in the fall.

Brian O’Donnell, Belle Harbor, was awarded forty thousand dollars from Manhattan College. Brian will attend Lehigh University in the fall.

Edward Velten, Breezy Point, was honored with forty six thousand dollars in scholarship money from St. Joseph’s University in Pennsylvania. Edward has chosen to attend the University of Maryland in the fall.

Ryan Willsen, Broad Channel, was honored with a twenty thousand dollar scholarship to attend Siena College. Ryan also received thirty thousand dollars from Ithaca College, forty two thousand dollars from Le Moyne College, forty thousand dollars from St. John’s University and twenty thousand dollars from the University of Scranton. Ryan will attend Siena in the fall.


Thomas French, Belle Harbor, is also among the Xavier graduates and he will be attending West Virginia University.
