Broad Channel Bits

Time really flies! It is hard to believe that July is here already. Flowers of all different kinds and colors are blooming all over the area and small green tomatoes are on some plants. With the good mix of sun and rain we have had, all plant life seems to look bigger and better, like it is really enjoying the blue skies and other niceties that go with this summer weather.

Mardi Gras 2004 is really hopping! Duffy’s Irish Pub will be "Raisin Hell" at the 14th Road Back House on July 31 from 7 to 11 p.m. at $15 per person. Enjoy Live Music, A Cappella Show, beer, food. Buy tickets now at Duffy’s on Cross Bay Blvd. in Broad Channel. A limited number of tickets will be sold. Call 718 318-2300. All proceeds to BCVFD.

I got an email telling me that the East 8 Road Flea Market was great! On Saturday, July 3 and Sunday July 4, East 8 Road will be having a cake sale in front of the firehouse. 

On Tuesday, July 6 they will be hosting a Kiddy Bingo at the Presbyterian Church Hall from 1p.m. to 4 p.m. All the proceeds from all of these events go to the BCVFD. 

Shad Creek Association presents its 10th Annual It’s a Fluke Tournament on Saturday, July 10 at 529 Crossbay Blvd., Broad Channel, 718 474-5476.  This year will be the biggest and best yet with over $1000 in prizes! 

There is an entry fee of $25 per angler. Tournament begins at 7 a.m. Weigh-in is at 3 p.m. sharp.

Captains meeting/sign-up is on Thursday, July 8 starting at 5 p.m. There will be food and beverages at the weigh-in party.

The Broad Channel Athletic Club will host a Thank You party for Marty Feeney on Saturday, July 17.

There will be music, food and drink at the BCAC Memorial Field at 4 p.m. that day. Marty and his family will be relocating to Florida.

All friends and neighbors from Broad Channel, Howard Beach and Rockaway are invited. 

On Sunday, July 18 at 10 a.m. there will be a Butterfly Walk in Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge.

Look for different types of butterflies and learn what they do and how important their role is in nature. Find swallowtails, monarchs, painted ladies and others. Pre-registration is required. Call for further information, 718 318-4340.

Readers of all ages can sign up for Summer Reading Programs at the Library. There are groups for children who need to be read to, kids who can read for themselves, teens and adults. Programs, prizes and parties are free for the entire family.

The Book Discussions have been reversed by the Library. On Thursday, July 15 at 10 a.m. "A Year in Provence" by Peter Mayle will be discussed and on Thursday, August 26, "Awakening" by Kate Chopin will be discussed.

A four-session workshop of Beginner’s Quilting designed for children age 8 and up will be held at the Library on Friday, July 9; Tuesday, July 13; Friday, July 16 and Monday, July 19 at 1 p.m. Class size is limited and pre-registration is required.

Advanced Drawing Classes with Sister Jean Shea at the Library are designed for talented teens. Sign up for this workshop to be held on two consecutive days: Wednesday, July 7 and Thursday, July 8 at 1 p.m.

The Broad Channel Library is asking for donations of new or good condition CD’s and DVD’s. They will be sent to the overseas troops as part of Operation Gratitude.

Recycling reminder: The city gave us 3 months to get back in the habit of recycling glass.

Now, each violation of recycling rules carries a $25 fine.

Sunset Picnic Concert Series began in Fort Tilden this past Sunday on the parade ground. Many people of all ages gathered to enjoy music from the NY Gilbert and Sullivan Players who played The Mikado during the first half of the program and other tunes as well as Gilbert and Sullivan requests during the second half of the program. The next concert will be held on Sunday, July 11. It will be A Tribute to the Big Bands by Danny Vincent Orchestra; a special surprise guest is expected. Local artists who are members of Rockaway Artists Alliance will show their artworks in the 10th Anniversary Member Exhibit at Fort Tilden in sTudio 7. The exhibit will run from Sunday, August 1 through Sunday, September 12, but will be closed Labor Day Weekend, September 4 and 5. The gallery will be open to the public and there is no charge for viewing the artworks.
