Historic Subway Train Comes To Rockaway

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) recently rolled out a train made up of refurbished and retired cars to celebrate the subway’s centennial. The train made a surprise visit to Rockaway on Saturday, rolling over the subway trestle between Broad Channel and the peninsula. The first car in the subway train was a 1963 World’s Fair special, painted in cream and robin’s egg blue. The final two cars are the famous “Redbirds,” now used extensively on the east coast as underwater fish and coral breeding grounds. The picture was shot by a diner at Pier 92 Restaurant. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) recently rolled out a train made up of refurbished and retired cars to celebrate the subway’s centennial.
