Notes from the High C’s

Rockaway Music and Arts Council
by Sharon Gabriel

It is hard to believe that another summer is upon us and that the RMAC will soon be presenting another set of free concerts at Fort Tilden beginning Sunday, June 27 at 6 p.m.

The first of our Sunset Picnic Concerts will be the wonderful Gilbert and Sullivan Players and their production of "The Mikado."

If you remember, the Players were with us several years ago for a wonderful production of "HMS Pinafore." They are a delightful company with great singers and actors and they are a joy to watch. The company recently performed at City Center and the New York Times called the performance "colorful, lively and masterfully updated."

With all of the Japanese flair needed for this production, Gilbert and Sullivan are all Victorian England. Both of the men were born during the reign of Queen Victoria and their collaboration began in the late 1870’s.

Together, Gilbert and Sullivan won world acclaim with their operettas. Beside "The Mikado" and "Pinafore," they wrote "The Pirates of Penzance" and "Topsy Turvey," among others.

Sullivan wrote the music and Gilbert the words and as we listen to their operettas, we can appreciate what each man brought to the total material. We can hum along with the music and sing along with the lyrics.

We know that you will have a wonderful time should you join us for the concert on the 27th. Bring your chair and some food, some wine and cheese and enjoy the wonderful outdoors and the equally-wonderful show.

The remainder of our Sunset Picnic Concerts are sure to please everybody, with some old friends and some new ones as well.

On Sunday, July 11, the RMAC will present music and dance to the "Big Band Sound."

Every other Sunday after that concert, there will be another concert, ending with the Leon Locke Memorial Concert on Sunday, August 22, when the world-famous "Platters" will be performing.

RMAC President Barbara Eisenstadt, John Musumeci and myself look forward to saying hello, so come and join us for Gilbert and Sullivan on June 27.

The RMAC’s annual membership drive is currently underway. We hope that we can count on you to become a member and help us to provide the great programs that we present, both in our public schools for our children, and our museum trips, concerts and Fall Festival.

Simply look for the tent nearby the stage at Fort Tilden and join the RMAC for 2004.
