History To Be Made At Tournament

History To Be Made At Tournament

This Saturday, June 19, beginning at 10:00 a.m., rugby returns to Ft. Tilden after a one-month hiatus. The annual Rockaway 7’s Rugby Tournament, hosted by your hometown Rockaway Fisheads Rugby Club, promises to be an action packed, exciting and history-making day.

The 31st edition of the tournament will feature top clubs from across the east coast as well as others from around the nation and the world. This year’s tournament will once again be a Northeast Qualifier and will feature over 40 teams in several
different brackets.

Teams will compete in men’s open, qualifier, college and women’s divisions with championships awarded in each bracket. Also on tap is a youth rugby clinic for any youngsters interested in learning the game and participating in the future. The Rockaway Fisheads encourage local parents to bring their youngsters (boys AND girls are encouraged to participate) and expose them to this fun filled and exciting sport. The action starts early and will go into the early evening, with championship matches beginning around 4:30 PM.

This year’s tournament will also be a history making event as the first ever edition of the Rockaway "Fishtails" women’s Rugby Club will make their debut. The Fish Tails as they will be known have been assembled by Cortland State Rugger and Rockaway resident Becky Black.

The team has been training for over a month under the tutelage of Rockaway 7’s guru Jim’ Kermit’ Egan.

"The women have been practicing right alongside the men and have even actually participated in several touch rugby scrimmages with the men!!" Egan said. "This is a pivotal moment in the history of Rockaway Rugby."

The Rockaway Fisheads female counterparts will don the blue and white of the famous locals and begin what should be a long and enjoyable partnership. The Fisheads will be cheering hard for the "Ladies Auxillary" and also attempting to repeat as tournament champions in the men’s open division. Cheer on the Fisheads, the Fishtails, and the 3 time New York 7’s Champion FDNY Rugby club in what promises to be a fun filled and hard hitting day of Rugby Football.

Following the event, the Rockaway Rugby Clubhouse (113 and Rockaway Beach Blvd.) will host a post tournament awards ceremony and party. Featured will be the famous U2 cover band known as.....2U!!!!, which is a very clever name and a very talented band that should not be missed. See it all and see it for free as this annual rite of summer on the Rockaway peninsula promises to be better than ever!!!!
