Family In Rockaway

Phyllis Adams died on May 22. She was 56 years old.

Adams, who was born in Georgetown, Guyana, has two grandchildren living in Rockaway.

She is survived by her children, Joy McKenzie, June Adams, Martin Lynch and Karen Adams; grandchildren, Troy, Erika, Samantha, Shantel, Marvin, Ashantie, CJ Dellon and Maria; great grandchildren, Bryanna, Kalls, Troy Jr. and Trasvon; siblings, Barbara Anastasia and Sydney, Neville, Calvine and Morris Adams, Elaine Hoppie and Joy Headley; daughter in law, Charles McKenzie; sisters in law, Carol and Rita Adams; brother in law, Neville Hoppie; and other family members and friends.

Funeral arrangements entrusted to Jeremiah C. Gaffney's Funeral Home. A service was held at God's Battalion of Prayer Church in Brooklyn. Disposition was at Evergreen Cemetery, Brooklyn.

Dr. Jaime J. Ayala

Dr. Jamie J. Ayala, who was a member of the medical staff at St. John's Episcopal Hospital, died on June 8. He was 47.

Ayala was preceded in death by his parents, Jorge and Marta Ayala; and siblings, Arabella, Myra, Karina, Ronnie and Zyra.

He is survived by his wife, Sandra Ayala; children, Lucrecia and Maria Ayala, Luis and Manuel Benitez; daughter in law Christina Castilla; and grandchildren, Ethan, Benjamin and Ysabella Benitez.

Funeral arrangements entrusted to Jeremiah C. Gaffney's Funeral Home, with a service at Gaffney's Friendship Chapel. Disposition was at Las Flores, Guatemala City, Guatemala.

Rosario N. Catalano
Lithographer

Rosario N. Catalano, a Belle Harbor resident for 20 years, died on June 11.

Catalano, who was born in Manhattan, served in the United States Army during World War II. He was a parishioner at St. Rose of Lima, and worked as a lithographer in the printing industry.

He is survived by his wife, Grace (nee Cafarella) Catalano; son, David Catalano; daughter, Maria A. Catalano; and a sister, Eunice Murphy; and two grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements entrusted to the Denis S. O'Connor Funeral Home. Interment was at St. Charles Cemetery.

Myrtle Faye Hayward-Grant Nurse

Myrtle Faye Hayward-Grant, whose daughter lives in Far Rockaway, died on May 23. She was 67.

Hayward-Grant, who was born in Richmond, Virginia, was a nurse at Elmhurst Hospital Center for nearly 45 years.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Gladys and Heywood Charity; and her husband, Frederic Lee Coone (Ottley).

Hayward-Grant is survived by her husband, Delroy Grant; daughters, List Ottley-Chesterfield and Deanna Hayward-Garrett; stepson, Ricardo Grant; grandchildren, Brandon, Ty'Rell, Eric, Blaire, Breanna and Keanu; sister, Eleanor Oliver; aunts, Yvonne (Robert) and Delores Robinson (Gordon); nieces, Donna, Sandra, Tracie, Yolanda and Dawn; nephews, Harold Jr. and Anthony; other family and friends; and a special mention to: Tonio, DeAnne, Andrea and Daykawn, who adopted Hayward-Grant and called her "Ma" and "Grandma."

Edna Yvonne Heard
Salesperson

Edna Yvonne Heard, who has grandchildren living in Rockaway, died on May 11.

Heard, who was born in Hartwell, Georgia, worked as a salesperson. She was affiliated with the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks and the Wings of Faith Outreach Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Angue Rona Heard-Grant and Ozell Grant.

Heard is survived by her children, Danielle and Michelle Heard, Keish McClendon, Keith Heard and Jonathan Whitmore; grandchildren, D'Andra, Shavar, Kyzell, Tyquan, Keith, Jaquan, Tatiyana and Star; great grandchild, Messiah Jr.; sister, Yvette Harrison; niece, Charrise Harrison; cousin, Eleanor Teasley; aunts, Nina Teasley and Lena Swain; uncle, Mitchell Teasley; and other family members and friends.

Mary Jackson
Beautician

Mary Jackson, a Rockaway resident for more than 30 years, died on June 4. She was 84.

Jackson, who was born in Edgefield, worked as a beautician. She was parishioner at the Laura Grove Baptist Church, in South Carolina, Friendship Baptist Church, in Brooklyn and New Hope Missionary Baptist Church, in Rockaway.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Allen Jackson.

Jackson is survived by her daughters, Erleane and Mary; nine grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, seven great great grandchildren; sisters, Bertha, Ellen, Roth, Lillie and Gladys; brothers, Jessie, Robert, Johnnie and Reuben; five brothers in law; four sisters in law; spiritual daughters, Mary Nesbif and Alice McNeil; special friends from Brooklyn, Mary Overstreet, Esther Bush, Juliet McCullough and Mammie Shell; and other family members and friends.

John A. Lynch
35-Year Resident

John A. Lynch, a Rockaway resident for more than 35 years, died on May 3. He was 77.

Lynch, who was born in Panama City, Panama, is survived by his wife, Maria Lynch; daughter, Loreane Williams; sons, Leslie Williams, Albert and Gabriel Wilson; grandchildren, Shanika Jones, Quintessa, Leslie, Tyrell, Andre and Lamik Williams and Mark Johnson; sisters, Ruth and Adela; brother, Lincoln; and other family members and friends.

Jeremiah B. McCarthy
Electrician, Builder

Jeremiah B. McCarthy, who lived in Rockaway Beach for 45 years, died on June 11.

McCarthy, who was born in County Cork, Ireland, was a parishioner at St. Rose of Lima. He was a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians and was retired from Local 3, International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers - he worked as an electrician and was in construction.

McCarthy was preceded in death by his wife, Mary McCarthy; and a brother, Peter McCarthy.

He is survived by his son, John McCarthy; daughter, Kathleen Sebade; sisters Maureen Nagle, Patricia Curran and Chrissy Gilroy; brothers, Declan, Paddy and Sean; and grandchildren, Olivia and Ava Sebade and Brigid McCarthy.

Thomas S. O'Brien
St. Francis College Professor

Thomas S. O'Brien, a Rockaway Point resident for 6 years, died on June 15.

O'Brien, who was born in New York, New York, was a parishioner at St. Thomas More Church. He was professor emeritus at St. Francis College, in Brooklyn.

O'Brien is survived by his wife, Sally (nee Walsh) O'Brien; sons, John and Kevin O'Brien; goddaughters, Dr. Claire Sanger and Elizabeth Ann Ahrend; and dear friends, Jack and Celine O'Hara, Brendan and Bernadette Reilly; Frances Walsh, James and Linda King and Colleen Walsh.

Josephine Santamore
Registered Nurse

Josephine Santamore, a Rockaway Beach resident for nearly 45 years, died on June 14.

Santamore, who was born in Kingston, Pennsylvania, was a registered nurse and worked in the hospital and healthcare industry.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Santamore; brother, James Nosko; and sisters Dorothy Poltrock and Margaret Tenowich.

Santamore is survived by her sons, James McClean, Walter McClean Jr. and William McClean; sister, Frances Evans; and grandchildren, Laurin and Walter III.

Mark Aaron Walker
IRS Clerk

Mark Aaron Walker, who worked in Rockaway for nearly eight years, died on May 27. He was 46.

Walker, who was born in New York City, was a parishioner at the Epiphany Lutheran Church. He worked as a clerk for the Internal Revenue Service.

Walker is survived by his mother, Ernestine; aunt, Annette; and other family members and friends.

Adam Watkins Jr.
Horse Trainer

Adam Watkins Jr., who lived in Rockaway for more than 40 years, died on June 1. He was 79.

Watkins, who was born in Greensboro, North Carolina, was a parishioner at the Antioch Church of God. He worked as a horse trainer and spent most of his life at Aqueduct Racetrack.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Millie Colson Watkins and Adam Watkins.

Watkins is survived by his children, grandchildren and other family and friends.
