PS 106 Donates Penny Harvest Money To Library

Students from P.S. 106 in Far Rockaway have presented Queens Library officials with a check for $250 to support the library’s services. The money was raised through the Common Cents "Penny Harvest." The presentation was made by members of the P.S. 106 Student Council and was accepted by Thomas Alford, Queens Library’s Deputy Director – Customer Services and Michael Daly, Chief, Investigation and Security. Other grant recipients were Virginia Rountree accepting on behalf of the St. Gertrude RC Church’s Senior Citizen Program ($250); and the P.S. 106 Student Council Sack Pack Program ($500), which will provide basic school supplies next term for students who cannot afford them.

The checks were presented during an assembly program, which centered on reading and literacy. Students Kwesi Bragton, Latavia Williams and Samuel Fougere read their own poetry. The P.S. 106 chorus sang. An excerpt from a play highlighting the importance of reading was performed. According to Principal Arthur Straus, P.S. 106 is one of very few schools to score "above average" on standardized tests, with 70% of the students passing, so the school’s focus on reading was true to form. Performance at PS 106 has improved steadily over the past few years and Straus and the staff are looking for even better gains in the future.

Common Cents New York is dedicated to advancing social justice and equal opportunity by emboldening a generation of young people to become community activists and good citizens during their youth. The Penny Harvest begins in the fall with students collecting spare pennies. They then meet to prioritize needs in their own communities, and progress to decide where to donate the money they’ve collected. P.S. 106 students collected and donated $1,000 this year through their Philanthropy Roundtable. More than $579,000 was collected citywide in 721 schools. Joe Ann Hopkins, Staff Developer, coordinated the program at P.S. 106.

Student Council members at P.S. 106 are Phoebe Baluyot, Shanice Brown, Shanice Cook, Silaka Cox, Rafael Eusebio, Alexis Harley, Jason Hodgson, Trevin Hunte, Monique Smith, and Jada Roldan.
